.: Tsunami Prediction : Real or Hoax? :.

I received a fwded email from my colleague this morning

Subject : July 22nd 2009 Another Tsunami

Hello there. I just wanted 2 let you know that please stay away from the beaches all around in the month of July. There is a prediction that there will be another tsunami hitting on July 22nd. It is also when there will be sun eclipse. Predicted that it is going 2 be really bad and countries like Malaysia (Sabah & Sarawak), Singapore, Maldives, Australia, Mauritius, Si Lanka, India, Indonesia, Philippines are going 2 be badly hit. Please try and stay away from the beaches in July. Better 2 be safe than sorry. Please pass the word around. Please also pray for all beings.

Thanks and have a nice day.

And you know these fwded emails where you do not know the credibility of such mails, I did what any curious person would do - I Googled.

And there are two website that I picked - Snopes.com and About.com. This is what they have to say:

Snopes.com

Conclusion : Claim false, coz apparently the whole theory that there will be an earthquake coz by the gravitational pull (hence the solar eclipes) is not valid as earthquakes are not caused by gravitational pull. And, apparently, earthquake are not predictable as scientist who have spend their whole lives studying it still can't divine when and where one will hit.

About.com : Urban Legends

Conclusion : Claim is a hoax as Tsunamis are caused by earthquakes, not eclipses and though astronomers are able to predict eclipses, no such capability exists for earthquakes, nor is there any known correlation between the two phenomena.

So there you go, the tsunami myth busted.
